Let customers speak for us
from 37 reviewsThis finally got me to pull the trigger on a model 439 for a hush puppy clone. I just kept getting stuck on not being able to have a threaded barrel until I found out that you had them made.
Price seems totally fine for this sort of niche item. It fits well in my 439, but I have yet to take it to the range. I wish it came with a thread protector because the threads are pretty out there.
I measured the threads to be about 0.5" long and bought a 1/2" x 28 thread protector (1/2" long and 0.6" OD). It fit well, but part of the thread protector goes over the unthreaded part of the barrel, exposing some of the threads when fully screwed on. I got another protector that was 5/8" long that did the trick; however I needed to remove some of the ID of the protector because it didn't slide over the unthreaded part of the barrel.
Look forward to any more parts that come out. Rear sight protectors? I think it'd nice if you could get some Model 39/439 black grips out in the market, maybe make them out of g10 or something?
Great service and excellent product. Greg was incredibly easy to work with and exceedingly accommodating. Would not hesitate to purchase items from Gregs Grips again in the future
One of your buddies posted this up on a gun forum and said you weren't going to do it again because the cost was too much, yet you sold out. I think you could do it again, maybe charge a bit more. Also would like to see an uncoated option is SS, as this forced me to buy a 39-2 when I could've just used my 639 with a plain SS version. I would also consider one for one of my 1006s, though since 10mm is not available subsonic, might be silly. Or a 945/4506, which is not silly - just buying another S&W gen 3 to host it.
Ran 120 rounds of 147gr through this barrel with a suppressor in my 539 and it was truly a religious experience. The Mk22-we-have-at-home has been a white whale of mine for years, and I could not be happier. Nary a failure to be had. I am so pleased with this that I now have designs to acquire a 559 as well. Greg, if you’re reading this, feel free to make some 3rd gen S&W 5906/4506/1006 threaded barrels as well, I will gladly give you all my money! You’re a true patriot.
It’s absolutely awesome that Greg had these made, and that the barrels are of great quality. Threaded barrels for these handguns haven’t existed in a while. I’m glad I jumped on this while they’re available.
Cool addition to make the platform more usable. Works great in my model 59 and 469 frame with 459 slide.
Fit perfect in my 459, couldn't be happier!
Excellent machine work and finishing. Shipping was fast. My only gripe, albeit a small one, is in my opinion for $280, it should come with a thread protector. But not a deal breaker, I bought the barrel without having the gun. Now on the hunt for a 39 or 59 variant so I can sneak around the house in a orange box.
Fits perfectly well, ran flawlessly and never once unthreaded from the suppressor!
Dropped right into my SW 459, no fitment issues whatsoever.
Ran about 150 rounds through it over the weekend.
Tested with my SilencerCo Octane 9, with booster spring.
Gun ran flawlessly with the barrel and suppressor, shooting was spectacular.
Looking forward to making some new sights for my 459 to finish my Mk22 reproduction.
Great work Greg!
Mk22 "Hush Puppy" 9mm Threaded Barrel
Actually more than pretty good, high quality and definitely worthy of jungles of Tselinoyarsk.
If you have been searching for a quality, drop-in, threaded barrel for your S&W Model 39 or 59 pistol — as I have been for decades — look no further. Greg has what you are looking for.
The only other solution has been to send your slide and barrel assembly to TT to be extended and threaded, which is a very involved process w/ long lead times. I much prefer Greg’s solution which is a single-piece design.
Initial observations:
1. Greg’s barrel dropped right into my prototype, stainless-steel frame, S&W Model 53 pistol. The fit is very precise. The barrel lock-up with the slide in battery is very tight with very little to no wiggle / play. Despite the precise fit, I did not have to force the barrel into the slide and barrel bushing, and reciprocating the slide to unlock and lock Greg’s barrel gives an exceedingly smooth action that is much more smooth than with the stock S&W barrel. The slide action is so “spit-on-glass” smooth with Greg’s barrel that it feels very much like working the slide on my Swiss Neuhausen, SIG P210-5-LS. Yes, it is THAT smooth.
The first most critical thing to check after the barrel lock-up, is whether the muzzle threads are concentric with the bore. As you can see in caption #1, Greg’s barrel with an AAC TiRant-9 suppressor attached to the 1/2x28” RH threads gauges as being perfectly, dead-center aligned with the bore. Yay, no baffle strikes!
2. Next, I checked the clearance from the back of the suppressor to the tip of the recoil rod with the slide fully retracted. There is ample clearance to ensure that when firing with Greg’s barrel, the rear of your suppressor isn’t going to impinge on or strike the nose of your recoil rod. See caption #2 in the pic.
3. The machining on Greg’s barrel is very fine with no galling, burrs or tool marks. The bore is mirror smooth with well-defined, sharp rifling and the chamber is mirror smooth with no reaming marks.
The nitrided finish on Greg’s barrel is not only flawless but very smooth to the point of feeling like it is self-lubricating, and extremely durable. After firing it 90 cycles suppressed, there is no appreciable wear to the finish on the barrel hood. This is very impressive. See caption #3 in the pic.
Greg has expertly polished the feed ramp to an even, mirror finish, and I experienced zero problems or hiccups feeding cartridges with fully jacketed “ball” or hollow-point bullets.
4. The 1/2” x 28 TPI RH muzzle threads on Greg’s barrel are precisely cut and “Goldilocks approved” — not too tight or too loose, but just right on the clearance fit with my suppressor mount. Very importantly, the muzzle of the barrel stops or indexes against the inside of the suppressor mount. This is the correct way to index a threaded barrel: inside the suppressor mount and not against the shoulder of the threads. Commensurately, this permits for a 7/16” ID x 9/16” OD x 1/16” thick o-ring to be retained at the groove just ahead of the shoulder. This gives an optimum gas seal without impacting the thread alignments. See Caption #4 in the pic.
Overall, Greg’s barrel is a premium barrel, with top quality in its fit, finish, build quality, material quality and performance. It is as close to match-fit as you can get with a drop-in barrel.
It is also an exceedingly rare find. I have not seen a one-piece, threaded barrel available for the S&W Model 39 / 59 in over 30 years. The price is very reasonable for its premium quality. I am contemplating to purchase another to ream the chamber for .356 TSW.

“This is top quality kit”
Those grips are great. So much better than the original ones. Gives just a little more for the hands to get a purchase on.
